What Content Should You Have On Your Website Home Page?

Website Homepage.jpgDesigning a good website that accommodates a lot of content is a tricky act indeed.

Have you ever come across a homepage littered with copy? Or, on the opposite spectrum, a homepage with barely any content at all? Think of your homepage as the gateway to your business. Visualize it! This is your chance to make a first impression and convey what you’re all about. Maybe your value proposition is simplicity – in that case, just a single login module makes sense.

For most marketers, however, there is a need for a bit more content and context than that. Your homepage content should be long enough to clarify who you are, what you do, where you’re located (if you’re local), your value proposition, and what visitors should do next. These visitors should leave satisfied, not overwhelmed or underwhelmed – and certainly not confused.

Here’s some “Must-Have” Content you should have on your Home Page:

  • Headline: Keep your headline clear, simple, with the focus on showcasing the site offerings.
  • Sub-Headline: Offer a brief description of what your company does.
  • Call-To-Action: Include a Call-To-Action above the fold that directs people to where you want them to go or do (e.g make an enquiry, download a content offer, etc.)
  • Image: Make sure to use an image that clearly shows what you offer. Avoid cheesy stock photos.
  • Benefits: Describe the benefits of the products/services you offer.
  • Social Proof: Build up trust and credibility by adding positive testimonials about your brand.
  • Navigation: Don’t forget about the user experience; to avoid a high bounce rate, provide your visitors a clear path into the different parts of your site.
  • Content offer: Include a content offer like an eBook to generate more leads.
  • Resources: Provide links to a resource center, as it helps to establish credibility as a thought leader. Visitors may not be ready to buy at that very moment but resources can help generate interest.
  • Success Indicators: Showcase your awards and certifications. It can really help in creating a good first impression.

I hope you've got some ideas for your website’s homepage; don’t forget to test the success by monitoring the level of engagement with your target audience!
